Avengers: Infinity War - What Happened to the Time Stone?

July 12, 2023

When Avengers: Infinity War blasted into theaters nearly four years ago, MCU fans were left with one big question. Why did Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) hand over the Time Stone to Thanos (Josh Brolin), allowing him to get closer to wiping out half of the universe?

The Time Stone is undoubtedly one of the most powerful tools in the MCU. It can change the past, as demonstrated by the way it put Dormammu into a time loop in Doctor Strange. It can also resurrect the dead, as seen when it gave life to Vision after Wanda Maximoff killed him in Avengers: Endgame. However, there is one thing that the Time Stone can't do: it can't create a new timeline. This means that it's impossible for the Avengers to defeat Thanos without all of the Infinity Stones.

This is why a theory has been brewing that the stones are still out there in some form. While Steve Rogers returned all of the Infinity Stones to their original timelines in Avengers: Infinity War, there are still alternate versions of those stones in the Multiverse thanks to variant timelines and that mysterious quantum tunnel.

This has led to speculation that the Time Stone was never actually destroyed, but rather reduced to an atomic level. It could be that it was in the Eye of Agamotto all along, or perhaps somewhere else on Xandar. The other possibility is that the Stone was reabsorbed into the Ancient One's reality after Thanos sucked her into his own time-loop.
