Big Pokey - What Happened to Pokey?

March 11, 2024

Houston rapper Big Pokey, the OG member of DJ Screw's Screwed Up Click and the voice behind tracks like "Ball N' Parlay," "Who Dat Talking Down" and a verse on Megan Thee Stallion's 2022 freestyle "Southside Royalty," has died at 48. According to reports and social media posts, Pokey collapsed during a performance Sunday morning (June 18) at Pour09 Bar & Rooftop in Beaumont, Texas. A video emerged of the rapper preparing to speak into the mic and then exhaling heavily, appearing to pass out and then falling backward onto his back.

When regular Lowry Park Zoo visitors noticed that the hollow tree where Pokey, a three-legged Florida black bear, often rested was empty Monday, they became concerned. The bear had been a zoo resident since 1981 and was considered to be the oldest of its residents. The zoo had no official word on his cause of death, but said a necropsy had been performed and that results were pending. Pokey was special to many zoo visitors because he was one of only three bears at the zoo and lost his front right leg when he was a cub.
