Breaking Bad Characters - What Happened to Ted Beneke?

January 24, 2024

Ted Beneke is one of the most frustrating characters on Breaking Bad, and that's because he doesn't get it. He's a good guy who just doesn't understand the seriousness of his illegal activities. He's one of the main reasons fans love to hate Walter White, a man who has more moral integrity than Ted.

Despite his best efforts, Ted gets caught for tax fraud at Beneke Fabricators, which he inherited from his father. To avoid bankruptcy and possible prison time, he needs to pay over $600,000 in back taxes. Skyler White tries to help him out by cooking the books, but he refuses her offer and insists that he'll pay the debt on his own. Skyler calls Saul Goodman, who sends his "A-Team" to force Ted to settle the debt. During their physical confrontation, Ted trips over a rug and breaks his neck.

When Skyler visits him in the hospital, she sees him rigidly sitting upright and wearing a halo brace. He tells her that he lied to medical personnel and police, claiming his broken neck was the result of an accidental fall, because he fears for the safety of his family. Skyler coldly replies, "Good," to his promise of silence and leaves the fate of Ted's life open-ended in the series.

Some people believe that Ted died in the episode when he tripped over a rug, but actor Christopher Cousins has revealed that it's not true. The fact is that he still survived the accident, but the injury left him paralyzed from the neck down.
