Euphoria Episode 4 - 'You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can' brings up some pretty interesting stuff with one of the main characters Cal Jacobs. We get to learn a little bit about him in this season and he has some serious feelings for his best friend Derek.
Cal and Derek were on the wrestling team in high school, and he spent every day with him. They were close friends but Cal always had some more than platonic feelings for him which he never expressed.
After he graduates, Cal and Derek go to a gay bar outside of town where they share a dance and their first kiss. They act out their confused feelings to INXS’s ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ and they end up getting a little too close for comfort.
But the night after, Cal receives a call from Marsha and he finds out she is pregnant! This is when things take a turn for the worst.
In order to save his family, Cal represses his sexual identity and he becomes an uptight man who has to man up and marry Marsha, raise his son Nate and become a pillar of the community. But there is still something deep within him that he doesn’t want to reveal. So he does what he has to, but it’s not easy for him. He can’t help but feel lonely. It’s a meltdown scene that really hits home for audiences.
