Jon Kabat-Zinn teaches how to bring our innate awareness to the surface. This enables us to reduce stress, calm our minds and ease physical discomfort. But most importantly, it helps us to make the most of each moment.
He also shows how mindfulness can be used in a variety of situations and environments from prisons to hospitals. He shares many of the stories that inspired him to pursue mindfulness as a form of healing and as a way to bring peace and compassion into our lives.
Kabat-Zinn’s work in the Stress Reduction Clinic led to a large body of research into Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) which is now used by doctors and nurses to treat patients with chronic illness, pain and stress. He has written 14 books on mindfulness and produced several meditation DVDs. The MasterClass is an up to date distillation of all that he has learned about the practice.
The first lesson starts with an introductory overview of the whole class, making abstract concepts easy to understand by using real life examples and analogies. He then explains in detail his definition of mindfulness which is important to understanding the direction the course will take.
The following lessons teach the Body Scan Meditation, the Mindful Hatha Yoga practice and the Sitting Meditation which make up the formal curriculum of MBSR. They are ideally used in conjunction with his book Full Catastrophe Living. Jon breaks down the techniques in a very clear and intelligent way, asking probing questions for the student to answer for themselves and introducing new skills at just the right point in the lesson.
