Lil Durk and Gunna Pay Tribute to Virgil Abloh

March 14, 2024

In a world where fashion designers are at the forefront of pop culture, Virgil Abloh was arguably one of the most influential of his generation. From his work with Been Trill, Kanye West, Pyrex and Off-White to his artistic designs for Louis Vuitton menswear, Abloh left his signature design cues throughout the modern world. He passed away in November 2021 but he hasn’t been forgotten.

Lil Durk and Gunna filmed their new music video “What Happened to Virgil” as a tribute to the late designer. The clip, directed by Cole Bennett and presented by Lyrical Lemonade, features multiple sets inspired by Abloh’s work. These include Drake’s plane Air Drake, which was painted by Abloh, a rooftop that replicates Abloh’s runway design for the brand’s 2022 Paris fashion week show and a Louis Vuitton store featuring the “Louis Dreamhouse” roof design that was one of his final projects.

Durk and Gunna are seen rapping in each set. The music video also pays homage to Abloh’s late brother D Thang and rapper King Von, who died in 2020.

“What Happened to Virgil” is the first single from Durk’s seventh album 7220, which was released on March 11. The album has so far been a massive success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200. It features a number of popular artists including Future, Morgan Wallen and Summer Walker. The album has been praised by critics for its strong storytelling and poignant message of overcoming struggles in life.
