A native of Syracuse, New York, Hart played running back at Michigan from 2004 to 2007 and is the program's all-time leading rusher. He was a two-time Doak Walker Award finalist and finished fifth in the 2006 Heisman Trophy balloting. Hart was also a two-time Big Ten Conference first team selection and the Bo Schembechler Award winner as a senior in 2007.

After three injury-shortened seasons in the NFL, Hart returned to college coaching with the University of Michigan where he served as a running backs coach from 2009 to 2013. He has since worked as an assistant at Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.

During his time in Kalamazoo, Hart coached two running backs to 1,000-yard seasons and MAC Freshman of the Year honors: Jamauri Bogan and Jarvion Franklin. He also helped the Broncos earn consecutive bowl bids for the first time in school history, including the 2015 Bahamas Bowl and 2014 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

After Hart spent four years in Indiana as running backs coach, he returned to his alma mater in 2023. He has coached two Wolverines to first-team All-Big Ten honors in Blake Corum (2020, 2021) and Hassan Haskins (2023). The running backs coach oversaw a potent run game that led the Big Ten in rushing yards each of his first three seasons. In 2023, he guided Corum to a breakout season that included a program record 58 touchdowns on the ground.
