The Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things has no shortage of tragedy. The story centers around the disappearance of young Will Byers, and from there, it branches out into a town that’s struggling with dark forces pulling away its inhabitants. But one of the biggest tragedies in the series’ history is a much more personal loss for cantankerous Hawkins Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour). Hopper’s daughter Sara died at a very young age, and she was an important part of his life before moving to Hawkins. The previous seasons showed flashbacks of Hopper and his daughter together, and it was clear that Sara’s death deeply affected him.
Through flashbacks we learn that Sara suffered from cancer, and she lost her hair as the chemotherapy wore on. Her parents tried to help her cope with her illness, but she eventually ended up alone. Hopper was left with a sense of guilt and emptyness and took up drinking and smoking to numb his pain.
The death of his daughter is what drives Hopper to find and protect Eleven throughout the series. But could it be that Eleven is actually his daughter? An eagle-eyed Reddit user by the name of keulenshwinger noticed a small detail in Season 1 that seems to confirm this theory.
