There was a lot to unpack this week after Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of a RAW taping on May 15. The women’s tag team champions took issue with some creative and, according to WWE, “walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis’ office with their suitcases in hand, placed their belts on his desk and walked out.”
Those are some strong words and, for the most part, they’re the only ones we’ve heard from the duo. Apparently, they felt that WWE wasn’t taking their tag division seriously enough and that the women in the six-pack challenge weren’t getting enough screen time. A viral Twitter thread from an account followed by both Naomi and Banks suggested that they were also unhappy with the overall direction of Raw and its booking.
More backstory is being revealed as credible sources start sharing more details of what went down. One report suggests that Naomi and Sasha had a meeting with Vince McMahon to discuss their concerns about the planned six pack match. That meeting is said to have led to Banks asking for the match to be changed. When McMahon refused, the pair left the building.
It’s unclear if either star will return to the ring at this point. If both stars choose to move on, it could spell big trouble for WWE as they’ll have a hard time finding other talent to fill the vacant spots. The good news is that All Elite Wrestling has opened a door for performers to build their careers outside of the WWE functional monopoly. This is something that wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago.
