What Happened on the Last Episode of the Rifleman?

July 12, 2023

A beloved Western television series wrapped up its run over 50 years ago, but the legacy of the Rifleman lives on today. This captivating show captivated audiences with its thrilling action sequences and poignant father/son themes - the series' final episode was no exception.

During the opening scenes of "The Vision," a season two episode, Lucas and Mark McCain are in sour moods when the boy dumps dirty laundry water on a patch of marigolds that were the flowers loved by their deceased mother. As they yell at one another, the viewer sees that a face behind the veil of a fortune teller is that of their mother, Margaret.

Later in the episode, a group of bandits kidnap Mark, but Lucas devises an ingenious way to outwit them and retrieve his son. This episode highlighted both Lucas' quick thinking and his ability to put himself in harm's way for the sake of those he cared about - traits that would help him throughout the rest of the series.

The Rifleman was a pioneer in the Western genre of television, with the first protagonist to be a single parent on primetime TV. It also influenced shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza to feature complex characters and delve into social issues that mirrored the times in which it was produced. As the show came to a close, its stars took on new roles in other productions, and many of them continued to act well into the 1990s.
