If you watch the Hallmark Channel, you might have heard of alex chivescu's story. He is a Michigan teen who, at the age of 16, made national headlines when he started writing letters to foster families in his school district asking for one to adopt him for his senior year so that he could pursue his dream of going to Harvard.
Alex grew up in a loving single mom who was a professor and had a passion for education. But after her car accident, she developed bipolar disorder and bounced in and out of treatment facilities. As a result, she was unable to care for her son.
So, she gave up her legal rights to him and he became a ward of the state. But he remained focused on his studies and, eventually, was admitted to Harvard with a full scholarship.
In fact, it is not uncommon for students to come from difficult backgrounds and gain admission to Harvard. But what's unique about this particular story is that it's being featured in a movie this weekend on the Hallmark Channel called "Finding a Family."
Starring Jared Abrahamson (Army Wives) as Alex and Kim Delaney ("Homicide") as his mother, this movie is based on a true story. It is a heartwarming and inspirational film. It doesn't have any big name stars but it makes up for it with excellent acting. It's definitely worth a look. It airs at 8 p.m. on Saturday night on the Hallmark Channel.
