During a recent episode of Teen Mom OG: Unseen Moments, Amber Portwood opened up about a very traumatic experience that has shaped her life. Her sister died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) more than two decades ago, and during the show, Portwood revealed how her tragic loss changed her approach to motherhood and caretaking.
SIDS affects around 2,500 babies every year and is linked to brain defects that control breathing and wakefulness, according to Parents magazine. However, experts have made great strides in minimizing the risk of SIDS by promoting safe sleep practices and offering educational materials to parents.
Her daughter Leah is 10 years old and she shares her with her ex-boyfriend Gary Shirley. When Leah was a baby, her mom and dad were worried that Leah might have SIDS and rushed her to the hospital.
She also had to deal with the stress of her family members being very critical about her life. As a result, she became more cautious with her kids and started to be extra attentive with their care, especially when it came to sleep.
Thankfully, she was able to make some positive changes and become a more responsible and mature person when she was released from prison in 2012 after serving a 5-year sentence for drug possession and other misdemeanors. She reformed and took anger management classes, which helped her get through her time behind bars.
As for her current status on the show, sources tell The Ashley that she has been fired from the show after a threatening call to co-star Ashley Jones. She has not filmed since the incident.
