What Happened to Cam Newton?

March 25, 2024

A video that went viral on Sunday appeared to show former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton getting jumped during a 7-vs-7 football tournament. The 34-year-old, who was wearing one of his signature hats, appears to fend off multiple people while a group of coaches shouts at him and pushes him down a set of stairs into a grass area against a fence. The brawl was eventually broken up by event security.

USA Today reports the altercation occurred at a tournament hosted by Newton’s foundation, C1N, which works to develop young athletes into NFL-caliber players. The website notes the tournament was part of an under-15 7-vs-7 league that C1N hosts throughout the year. The article states it’s not clear what started the scuffle. It also says it’s unclear if Newton was a victim of violence or was taunted. Two of the coaches involved, Steph Brown and TJ Brown, work for TopShelf Performance, a national 18U 7-vs-7 football program that trains receivers across youth, high school and college levels.

Neither the two coaches or Newton, who was not hit during the brawl, indicated they needed medical attention or wanted to pursue criminal charges, police said. The Atlanta Police Department is working with the tournament organizers to investigate the incident. In a podcast interview with Audacy V-103 Hip-Hop station, Newton says he has learned from the experience and won’t let it define him. He added that he regrets his role in the fight because it perpetuates a stereotype he doesn’t like.
