What Happened to Cheese Nips?

March 24, 2024

A beloved snack is disappearing from store shelves and fans are wondering what happened to cheese nips. The popular cheddar-cheese-flavored crackers were recalled in 2019 over concerns of plastic contamination. Since then, the snacks have disappeared from shelves. The disappearance is making fans nostalgic and leaves them clamoring for the return of their favorite snack.

According to the FDA, Mondelez Global LLC, the maker of Cheese Nips, voluntarily recalled select boxes of the crackers due to a potential presence of small food-grade yellow plastic pieces. These plastic pieces were found from a dough scraper that was incorporated into the production process. The company said that there have been no reports of injury or illness relating to the recalled items. This is the twelfth recall for food products over plastic concerns this year. Some of the other products pulled included Ragu pasta sauce, Entenmann’s Soft Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese.

The loss of Cheese Nips is a blow for fans who are still searching for worthy alternatives. Many of them have taken to Twitter to express their sorrow over the loss of their beloved snacks and hope for a return in the future.

Despite having a loyal fan base, the snacks had been declining in sales for years and the manufacturer, Kraft (the parent company of Nabisco), made the decision to discontinue them. The company likely did not want to put in the effort needed to keep up with changing market trends and competition from other cheese cracker options.
