What Happened to Chicharito?

March 29, 2024

The LA Galaxy are in the midst of a rough season and Chicharito’s injury has been a significant blow to their hopes of making the playoffs. The Mexico striker has been forced to sit out the rest of the year and will likely miss the entire 2024 campaign. It’s no secret that this is not how Chicharito would have wanted to end his career.

The goal machine was on a mission to put the Galaxy back in the conversation of one of the top teams in MLS. He started off with a slow start in his first season but once Greg Vanney came aboard as coach he was able to rekindle his goalscoring form. He closed any notions of being a one-season wonder with 17 goals in 2021 and was a catalyst in helping the Galaxy reach the MLS Cup Playoffs.

But his season was cut short after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in the 24th minute of the Galaxy’s U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal defeat to Real Salt Lake. The non-contact injury occurred when he stretched for a pass from teammate Riqui Puig and fell to the ground.

The Galaxy are in the final year of Chicharito’s contract and it’s hard to imagine them wanting him to reup if he is going to demand designated player money. There is nothing wrong with players wanting to make a living off the field but it can be a deterrent when you are trying to be the best player you can be on the soccer pitch.
