What Happened to DeVonta Smith Hand?

September 9, 2023

DeVonta Smith was a huge part of the Eagles offense last year, catching 88 passes for 1,129 yards and seven touchdowns. He was a reliable target for Jalen Hurts and he should see plenty of opportunities this season as well.

Smith put together a great first half in the CFP championship game against Ohio State, but was forced to leave after sustaining an injury to his hand. He appeared to jam his right index finger against an Ohio State defender while attempting to haul in a pass, and was helped off the field by an Alabama trainer. The Heisman Trophy winner went into the medical tent on the sideline, and it was later revealed that he suffered a dislocated finger.

While the injury is certainly concerning, it’s not necessarily a big deal for Smith, who will likely make a quick recovery. He will likely miss a few weeks of practice, but he should be ready for the regular season.

Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith is a valuable asset for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a big-play threat and has the potential to be a star at the next level. He is worth drafting in early Round 3 in all formats.

Smith struggled in Week 1 against the Giants, securing just one of his four targets. He will need to find a way to get more work with A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert, but he has the talent to be an impact receiver this year.
