What Happened to Gabby on Chicago Fire?

March 19, 2024

One of the most heartbreaking things that happens when you're a fan of a TV show is when your favorite character gets killed off. However, when Chicago Fire first responder Gabriela 'Gabby' Dawson left the show last year, it was for a good reason. But will she ever return?

Monica Raymund's Gabby Dawson was a fan-favorite on the NBC drama. As a paramedic on Ambulance 61 and a candidate on Truck 81, she was always ready to help her coworkers out in the heat of the moment. She also had a romantic relationship with fellow firefighter Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) throughout most of the show's run, which led to many a heart-stopping episode. And while the Dawsey duo faced their share of complications — including separations, pregnancies, foster parenting, and giving up a child — they ultimately got married in season 5.

But at the end of last year's season 6, Gabby decided to leave the city to move back to Puerto Rico for hurricane relief work. The move was a surprise to fans, as it seemed like the two would continue to share a strong connection in their marriage.

Raymund hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning to the show in a recurring cameo role, but as for now, she's busy with other projects. The actress stars as the lead in Hightown, a Starz crime drama that follows a federal fishy service agent in Cape Cod. She has also directed multiple episodes of other shows, including Law & Order: SVU, The Sinner, and Chicago PD.
