What Happened to Garoppolo?

March 21, 2024

LAS VEGAS -- A few weeks ago, when Kyle Shanahan addressed the Raiders' roster at training camp, he laid out what would happen if Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. That didn't seem like a big deal, but after Garoppolo injured his throwing shoulder in the season-opening loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, it became a whole lot more serious.

Garoppolo was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against his former team, the New England Patriots. He suffered what was deemed a back injury in the second quarter and exited the field. He was later taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. He is still undergoing tests, but coach Josh McDaniels seems optimistic that Garoppolo won't miss any significant time.

In his six starts this season, the 49ers' quarterback has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also had a 7-to-9 TD-to-INT ratio that's better than his 40-17 regular-season record with the Patriots.

In the meantime, Garoppolo's backup is Brian Hoyer, who started in Week 4 when Garoppolo sat out with a concussion. If Garoppolo is unable to play against the Bears, Hoyer will get the nod. Brock Purdy could also see some action if the Raiders decide to go with two quarterbacks for the time being.
