What Happened to Gibbs on NCIS?

March 26, 2024

Gibbs has been on NCIS for 19 seasons and was played by Mark Harmon. His story ended last fall when he decided to stay in Alaska after solving his final case and enjoy the peaceful life it offered. But that doesn't mean the series has closed the door on a potential return for the special agent in charge of the NCIS team.

NCIS showrunner Steven Binder recently told Entertainment Tonight, "I wouldn't be surprised if one day we see Gibbs back on the show again." It's certainly not out of the question as the 71-year-old actor reportedly wants to come back and continue with the series in some capacity.

The character of NCIS special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs has been a mainstay on the show for almost two decades and is loved by fans around the world. The private man of few words often speaks only in military jargon and does not discuss his personal life with his colleagues at NCIS, leaving his team to speculate about who he is. He is a Marine veteran and proud of it, wearing a replica of the iconic Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photograph from his home and frequently donning a USMC hoodie or T-shirt.

Gibbs is well-liked by his team and commands the respect of current NCIS staff Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) and Nick Torres (Darby Stanchfield). He also has a relationship with Abby Sciuto (Maria Bello), who joined the team after Gibbs's first wife Shannon and daughter Kelly were killed. He and his team have solved a number of high-profile cases, including the assassination attempt on drug dealer Pedro Hernandez.
