What Happened To Her is a documentary that explores our obsession with female bodies on screen. It intersperses found footage from films and police procedural television shows with interviews of the actors who play those bodies. The film is the latest project from director Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, whose previous documentaries include Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines and a piece on the role of sex doubles.
The film begins by examining the case of Tristyn Bailey, a model and actress who died in 2021 at the age of 28. An autopsy revealed she suffered 114 "stab or cutting wounds about her head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back," according to an unredacted court affidavit. Bailey's boyfriend, Aiden Fucci, claimed self-defense.
It also examines the strange circumstances surrounding the death of former Olympic sprinter Tori Bowie, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her murder in 2018. And it explores Meg Ryan's sudden disappearance from Hollywood, despite starring in some of the most popular romantic comedies of all-time including When Harry Met Sally, Joe Versus the Volcano and You've Got Mail.
It also discusses the strange circumstances of actress Amanda Bynes' conservatorship in 2013 after years of legal troubles, outlandish tweets and public incidents. Ultimately, Bynes was placed under a conservatorship by a judge after claiming she was suffering from a combination of mental illness and drug abuse. Her mother Lynn filed the conservatorship petition after Bynes admitted to using Adderall to stay skinny, and to abusing ecstasy and marijuana.
