What Happened to Jackson on The Rookie?

March 18, 2024

Titus Makin Jr was a key part of the show’s cast, appearing as Jackson West for over three seasons. But during The Rookie’s season four premiere, Jackson was killed off in a way that fans did not see coming. Makin spoke out about his departure from the show and why he felt that his character needed to leave.

Makin’s character was a rookie police officer assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. He was partnered with John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) and Doug Stanton (Brandon Routh). Throughout his time on the show, Jackson saw some of the more troubling aspects of police work firsthand, including systemic racism. This was brought to a head in the episode where Jackson came face to face with La Fiera and his men.

But it was his interaction with his new TO, named Doug Stanton, that really made Jackson start to doubt his career as a cop. In the Season 3 finale, Jackson confronted Stanton about the young black man he arrested who did not match the description of the suspect they were looking for. Jackson ultimately ended up reporting Stanton and he was fired from the force in the process.

Though it was a hard and tragic end to Jackson’s story, the last scene of him on the show left a positive note as Angela visited his grave and named her newborn son after him. He will not be forgotten, and it was a great choice to honor him in that way.
