What Happened to James Ellsworth?

August 23, 2023

When WWE first threw chinless jamook James Ellsworth into the ring with monster Braun Strowman on July 25, 2016, it seemed like it was a recipe for disaster. The local jobber was outclassed and squashed by a man who is almost double his size, but before the match, WWE announcer Byron Saxton asked Ellsworth what was he thinking about getting in the ring with Strowman, to which the scrawny chump replied with one of the most famous lines in WWE history: “Any man with two hands has a fighting chance.”

After that, Ellsworth quickly became a fan favorite on Raw and SmackDown as he feuded with Dean Ambrose and battled with AJ Styles. A highlight of Ellsworth’s WWE run came in 2016 when the chubby underdog scored a hat-trick of victories over The Phenomenal One, including a memorable sequence where he hit a superkick on Styles that David Otunga expertly dubbed as ‘No Chin Music.’

Even though he never became a major champion, Ellsworth made some incredible memories in the blue brand and is now back on the independent circuit. From causing Braun Strowman’s elimination at Survivor Series to helping Carmella win the first Women’s Money in the Bank briefcase, Ellsworth had an improbably successful WWE run as an underdog. This week, the chinless wonder was released from his contract with the company. He may not have much of a face, but he had a lot of heart in his short time with the WWE.
