What Happened to Jesus After He Rose From the Dead?

March 13, 2024

The core message of the Gospels is that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose from the dead (see 1Corinthians 15:1-8). But what happened to His body of flesh? What was His relationship to the throne of Heaven after He was seen resurrected?

When Jesus was alive, He promised that He would rise from the dead. But His disciples didn’t really believe that He meant it until they saw it for themselves.

Mary Magdalene was one of the first to see Jesus after He resurrected. She was weeping outside the tomb when He appeared to her, and at first she did not recognize Him. But He asked her for her name, and once she gave it, He knew her. Then He told her to go and tell the others that He was risen.

After that, the Gospels record several appearances of Jesus to His followers. Luke and John describe them at length, while Mark and Matthew mention them briefly. These appearances were amazing, as they included Jesus walking about, speaking with them, and even eating meals with them. They also showed that Jesus had a different body than His normal human body, as He could appear and disappear at will and pass through closed doors.

Finally, the Gospels record that after 40 days, Jesus was taken up to heaven. The disciples were looking at the sky, wondering where He went, when two angels came to explain that He had been taken up to heaven and would return in the same way.
