What Happened to John Dutton's Wife?

March 12, 2024

There have been plenty of tense moments on Yellowstone since the Paramount Network Western debuted two years ago, but perhaps none so brutal as Evelyn Dutton's (Gretchen Mol) tragic death in episode three. The matriarch was killed while riding a horse with her two children, Beth and Kayce, in a scene that could not be more heartbreaking. While we don't know exactly what happened to her, it is clear that Evelyn was spooked and that her horse fell on her.

As a result, she died, leaving her children heartbroken and resentful of each other to this day. Beth is the hardest-hit of all as she still blames herself for her mother's death and has vowed to never be the boss her mother was.

Kayce, on the other hand, has a more ruthless side to her personality and is more focused on business than family. She tangles with her husband, Rip Wheeler, a man she met at the ranch as a wayward teenager and who John took under his wing. Rip is a true cowboy and Beth's best friend, and the pair have been together for decades.

As for Beth's youngest sister, Monica, Kelsey Asbille portrays the character as a confident and uncompromising woman who is not afraid to speak her mind or stand up for herself. She is married to a Broken Rock Reservation native, and the two have a son named Tate. She and her family are constantly navigating being members of both the Dutton and Indian communities.
