What Happened to Kyler Murray?

March 18, 2024

Kyler Murray’s return to the Arizona Cardinals practice field this week was a welcome development. But the team’s franchise quarterback is still a long way from returning to game action. He’s a week away from being activated off the physically unable to perform list and more than a month out from playing his first game for the Cardinals in 2023, according to league sources.

Murray tore his right ACL during a non-contact play against the New England Patriots on December 12 last year. He underwent surgery and rehabilitated for nine months, nearly to the day.

Putting him on the field this early could be risky for both the knee and the Arizona Cardinals’ playoff hopes. Many players returning from an ACL tear don’t fully recover until the following season. Moreover, the Cardinals’ offensive line is one of the worst in the NFL. It’s not a good idea to put a young QB in the position to be hit repeatedly until he is 100% healthy.

During his time on the PUP list, Murray was able to participate in all team activities and meetings but was not allowed to practice with his teammates. Nevertheless, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been progressing in his comeback and is expected to be on the active roster next week for the Cardinals’ game against the Seattle Seahawks. In preparation for his return, he’s been preparing by carrying a full play sheet on his wristband to ease his transition back into the huddle.
