What Happened to Leigh Garner?

July 29, 2023

BIRMINGHAM (WIAT) -- There have been several changes to the weekday anchor lineup at CBS 42 News. Earlier this month, viewers may have noticed that a few familiar faces are no longer with the station. News anchors Ken Lass and Brooke Smith have both left the station.

Both were well-known in the community for their coverage of the April 2012 tornadoes, and Leigh's dedication to covering the tragedy won her an Emmy nomination for outstanding local news reporter. Leigh has been with the station since June 2010, when she joined the team as a Tuscaloosa bureau reporter.

The media's favorite shot of Garner, a scantily-clad photo from her time as a Tennessee Titans cheerleader, was used in many reports to pique interest in the child rape case. However, what got lost in the hysteria was that Garner did not admit to the crime — rather, she pleaded no contest to the charge and received 18 months probation, according to TMZ.

The Birmingham native was a graduate of the University of Alabama. She began her career as a weekend sports anchor for KPTM in Parkersburg, West Virginia before moving to the Birmingham area in 2008. Most recently she was the evening news anchor and weekday morning host for WSFA in Tuscaloosa, and she has been with CBS 42 News since its inception in 2010. She'll be missed by fans of local broadcasting.
