What Happened to Mac Jones?

March 18, 2024

FOXBORO -- Mac Jones has a lot to work on. The third-year quarterback was the New England Patriots' top pick in 2021 and showed some promise his rookie season, but he has taken major steps backward in Year 3. He has been benched multiple times this year, including Sunday's loss in Deutschland, which resulted in the team promoting Nathan Rourke to start ahead of him.

This is not to say that the team's coaching staff hasn't tried to help Jones, who is a good thrower but has struggled with his accuracy and decision-making. But if you look at his interceptions to touchdowns ratio, it's clear that the message is not getting through. Jones has 12 interceptions this season, and his team is 1-3 since he was demoted to the backup role behind Bailey Zappe.

One of those picks came late in the first half, when Jones threw the ball to Demario Douglas running a deep route. The pass was undercut and went straight to Bobby Okereke, who returned it for a 55-yard pick six seconds before the clock struck zero. It was a putrid play that cost the Patriots field position, which they were unable to overcome in the second half.

A source tells WEEI that Jones isn't expected to return to the starting job next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. And with a new-look offensive unit forming in place of the old, it may be time for Jones to move on.
