When fans hear the name matt hughes they instantly think of one of the greatest welterweight champions to ever grace the octagon. However, there is another side to the story of the UFC legend that not many people are aware of. Hughes survived a horrific train accident that left him clinging to life in a medically induced coma.

On June 16, 2017, Hughes was driving his pickup truck near his Montgomery County home when he crossed in front of an oncoming train. The two-time MMA champ suffered severe head injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma for 19 days. Hughes is currently working on his recovery, including re-learning to walk and talk. He regularly posts updates about his progress on social media and is an inspiration to all who follow his journey.

In a recent appearance on the MMA Junkie podcast, 'Legend 2 Legend', Hughes opened up about the tragic accident and how he is slowly working his way back to full health. He also addressed why he couldn't see the train coming due to the lack of proper railroad crossing signs in his area.

The former UFC champion shared a very emotional moment with MMA Junkie host Burt Watson when asked about the incident that almost claimed his life. He continued to express his gratitude for all of those who have supported him on his road to recovery and thanked the listeners for their support as well.
