What Happened to Matt Riddle?

April 2, 2024

In his brief stint with WWE, Matt Riddle managed to win over fans with his quirky and carefree persona. The former professional MMA wrestler signed with the company in 2018, making his NXT debut on October 31.

The New Zealander quickly became a fan favorite with his gimmick as the stereotypical carefree, barefoot surfer valley boy. He would also make waves in the ring, winning multiple titles with promotions such as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and World Wrestling Network/Evolve.

After a stellar NXT run, including being named the Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Wrestler of the Year by readers of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Riddle was promoted to the main roster in 2021. He enjoyed some success in the main event, winning the United States Championship and two Raw Tag Team Championships with Randy Orton as RK-Bro.

However, he started to find himself in hot water with WWE due to multiple behavioral issues. He was warned after crossing several wellness terms and was told he needed to go back on a 30-day program.

Riddle was ultimately released from WWE in September of 2023. Since then, he has competed in Major League Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

He will return to action on Saturday as he faces Jacob Fatu in the MLW Kings of Colosseum. Follow us on Twitter to stay up to date with all the latest wrestling news. You can also listen to Ring Rust Radio for all the latest wrestling talk.
