What Happened to Matthew Perry Speech?

March 14, 2024

Matthew Perry was a beloved friend to many, always seconds away from a wisecrack or a show-stopping grin. But the actor was also a struggling addict who fought long, painful battles with alcohol and painkiller addiction. His admissions and stories from his years on the hit TV show helped to raise awareness of addiction and recovery. Now, his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, goes deeper than he ever has before.

The memoir recounts the tumultuous relationship with drugs and alcohol that Perry had for most of his life, including his many relapses. He says that he attended approximately 6,000 AA meetings, spent over 30 years in therapy, and was at least in treatment once a year. He describes his fear of abandonment as the reason he ended most romantic relationships before they could become full-on serious. He even recalls a summer in which he randomly made out with Gwyneth Paltrow inside a closet in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Fans were worried when the 51-year-old appeared to slur his speech in a People interview ahead of the Friends reunion special that premiered this month on HBO Max. But sources say that the actor's slurred speaking was due to emergency dental work he underwent before filming.

Sources tell People that Perry underwent a procedure on his teeth after his front teeth fell out while he was biting into peanut butter toast. He needed all of his teeth replaced and had a mouthful of dentures when the interview was taped.
