ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The firefighter who hung up on the Manzano High School student who died after being shot in front of his friends is suing Bernalillo County. Matthew Sanchez quit his job with the Albuquerque Fire Department after a recording of the 911 call was made public. He later was hired by the Bernalillo County Fire Department but was fired just days after starting his new job. He’s now suing the county, saying he was qualified for the position and was unfairly fired.
Emergency dispatchers are trained to deal with calls that are stressful and emotional. They’re taught not to take what callers say personally and to just follow protocol. In this case, the protocol was to get help for Jaydon Chavez-Silver, who was shot in front of his friends while watching them play cards inside their home.
