The 1986 film Top Gun has many unsolved mysteries. From who the real Jay Moriarity was to what really happened during his infamous wipeout at Mavericks, there are several questions left unanswered from the movie. Fortunately, the film did provide some insight into how he survived that epic wipeout and what made Mavericks so big.
However, one of the biggest mysteries from the film was what happened to Mavericks late father, Duke Mitchell. The film showed him sacrificing himself to save his wingman, Goose. While Viper did mention that Mavericks dad was killed during a top secret mission, it did not go into detail as to why or how.
In the sequel, Maverick was still torn up over the death of his friend. His feelings were further complicated when he was forced to train one of the new recruits at TOPGUN, who happens to be Goose’s son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (played by Miles Teller). Maverick has a strained relationship with Rooster because he blocked his application to flight school years ago, which he apologizes for.
During the climax, Maverick is forced to partner up with Iceman and Hollywood on a high-risk mission to rescue the SS Layton from a group of attacking MiGs. Despite the risk, Maverick and his teammates manage to shoot down four of the enemy planes, including two in a midair dogfight. However, their mission was compromised when a faulty fuel pump exploded in the fighter jets, forcing them to eject.
