What Happened to Metro Boomin?

October 11, 2023

Producer, record executive, and DJ Metro Boomin has been hit with a tragedy that will leave him shaken for some time to come. TMZ reports that his mother Leslie Joanne Wayne was killed by her husband (not Metro's biological father) on Friday night, and then later took her own life. Cops found her body near Atlanta over the weekend, and an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Born Leland Tyler Wayne, Metro Boomin rose to prominence in the 2010s due to his dark production style and prolific collaborations with trap and hip hop artists of all shapes and sizes. Those artists include rappers Future, Migos, Gucci Mane, 21 Savage, and Travis Scott among many others. In a 2013 article from The Fader, Metro credits his mom with encouraging him to pursue music and even drove him 17 hours round-trip to Atlanta every weekend so that he could form relationships and collaborate with active rap artists.

Over the years, Metro has built a massive fanbase and his social media accounts have become a regular source of entertainment. His most recent activity involved partnering with the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation to kick off their Single Moms Are Superheroes initiative that honors and celebrates single mothers across the country. Earlier this month, Metro teamed up with the foundation to treat 26 single mothers and their children to a VIP experience at the Falcons vs Steelers game in Atlanta. He covered the families' travel expenses, gave them tickets to the game, and arranged access to Mercedes-Benz Stadium through the players' tunnel ahead of kickoff.
