Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) first debuted on The Young and the Restless in 1978, and he's been a part of the story ever since. In fact, he's one of the longest-running characters in daytime history, and he's still a fan-favorite. Paul has evolved over the years, from a bad boy to a police detective and even the boss of Genoa City's top cops. However, the Y&R writers have recently sidelined Paul, and fans are wondering what happened to him.
It seems that Y&R is looking to save money by reducing the number of recurring actors. They're also trying to find ways to use Paul without having to pay him. This has been frustrating for both the fans and Davidson, who posts frequently on social media about his time on the soap opera.
In recent storylines, Paul has been investigating a psychopathic serial killer named Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown), who used plastic surgery to look like Phyllis Summers (Eileen Davidson). In another storyline, he helped Nikki Newman (Vicky Hernandez) recover from her car accident. Later, he saved her life when Isabella tried to drown her in a bathtub. Paul is also investigating a mobster who's abusing his daughter, April (Lauralee Bell).
Paul's been off-screen since 2020, and it doesn't seem that the writers will bring him back anytime soon. It's unclear if they're planning to kill him off or if they'll simply move him into a different role on the show.
