What Happened to Paula Jones?

July 29, 2023

Many US Presidents have skeletons in their closets. But few are as infamous as Bill Clinton, who was involved in a number of scandals, including the one involving his intern Monica Lewinsky. But a few years before Lewinsky came into the spotlight, another woman named Paula Jones brought the former President’s sexual misdeeds to light. Her 1994 lawsuit against Clinton sparked the Sexgate scandal, which led to the President’s impeachment in the House and acquittal in the Senate. Now, a new side of the story is being told in FX’s award-winning true crime anthology series Impeachment: American Crime Story. Annaleigh Ashford plays Jones in the show. And during a Zoom call earlier this week, she spoke about preparing to play the role and how it has impacted her personal life.

She knows very few people in her current living situation. She doesn’t have a car in freeway-laced Los Angeles, and she stays home with her husband, a ticket seller for Northwest Airlines, and their two preschool-age children. Her only friends are her hairdresser (who traveled to her California apartment with her recently, doing touch-ups between interviews) and a friendly upstairs neighbor. Her only public relations representative is Susan Carpenter-McMillan, who was her lawyer until last year when she decided to stop working on the case full time.

But while the lawsuit has taken its toll on her personal relationships, she’s still resolute in her fight for justice. “It’s not over, and I don’t intend it to be,” she said.
