What Happened to RG3?

March 16, 2024

The short tenure that RG3 and Jay Gruden shared in Washington went very badly to say the least. It was an extremely difficult time for both men, and it seems as though they are now in the midst of an ugly feud that is rehashing everything that was bad about their shared era with the Redskins.

RG3 is a dual-threat quarterback who has played professionally in both college and the NFL. He was a sensation during his rookie season and looked like he could revolutionize the position in the league. Unfortunately, injuries sapped his talent and put him on a path to journeyman status much sooner than anyone anticipated.

Griffin sat out the entire 2014 season, and when he returned to action, he was a shell of his former self. He had a dislocated ankle and was able to play in just nine games in the season. He was also a liability on the run, often avoiding sliding and attempting to extend plays too much.

Griffin was not effective in his return, and it didn’t help that he was co-signed by a naive owner who wanted him to go from elementary football to graduate-level stuff. The result was a miserable season for both him and the Redskins. He was replaced by Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, and Washington finished 4-12 that year. The Redskins haven’t won a playoff game since.
