It’s been more than a month since Dish Nation star Rickey Smiley lost his 32-year-old son to an overdose. The radio host recently sat down with Craig Melvin for an interview where he opened up about the heartbreaking loss of Brandon.

Smiley says he’s been trying to stay positive. He also admits to having a very supportive group of family and friends who have been helping him get through this difficult time. He also reveals that he sees a therapist twice a week to help him regulate his emotions.

He’s also been using social media to keep people updated on his healing journey. He also wants to encourage other families to have conversations about drug addiction.

Rickey Smiley’s son Brandon Jamaad was found unresponsive at his home on Jan. 29 and died at the hospital later that day. The Jefferson County coroner’s office hasn’t yet released a cause of death, but foul play or trauma is not suspected.

The aspiring stand-up comedian was also an actor and had a young daughter, Storm, with his girlfriend. He had been battling painkiller addiction for years.

Smiley is also an author and has a new book out called Sideshow: Living with Loss and Moving With Faith. He is also fighting for grandparents’ rights to see his late son’s daughter. His other children include D’Essence, Malik and Aaryn Smiley. Check out the video of him talking about his son below. It’s sure to bring a tear to your eyes!
