What Happened to Smosh?

March 14, 2024

When smosh was founded by Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla 12 years ago, the duo began with a small YouTube channel that quickly grew to a large media empire. The comedy duo has appeared in various different projects including video games, television shows, apps, and merchandise. They also frequently engage with their fans through social media and events like Vidcon.

However, despite all of this success, Smosh has had some criticism over the years. The channel has been accused of having a toxic culture, mishandling mental health issues, and being money hungry. However, the channel has been able to overcome these obstacles and continue to thrive as one of the most popular YouTube channels.

In June of 2017, Anthony Padilla left Smosh to create his own personal YouTube channel called AnthonyPadilla. He claimed that he felt that since Smosh was now a brand owned by a company, he no longer had the freedom to make creative decisions on his own. This was a major decision for the channel and it caused controversy. Many viewers have asked for Anthony to return and others have congratulated him for moving on with his own content.

After leaving smosh, Anthony continued to produce solo videos but his views were a fraction of what Smosh’s uploads get. Eventually he found a format that worked for him, interviewing people from all walks of life on his show “I Spent the day with.” The series has been a hit and it’s given Anthony the creative freedom he was looking for.
