The tumultuous journey of Steve Wilton, played by actor Justin Chatwin, on the hit Showtime series Shameless came to a head in Season 5, when the writers decided it was time for him to leave the show. Throughout the series, fans had become heavily invested in his complex and toxic relationship with Fiona Gallagher, portrayed by Emmy Rossum. However, the sleazy man’s pattern of deceit and manipulation ultimately wore down his relationship with Fiona, causing her to finally break up with him.
Despite this, Jimmy-Steve remains a shady presence on the show, constantly going by multiple names and involving himself in elaborate criminal schemes. In one episode, he even gets involved in smuggling cocaine into Canada for Frank’s drug dealer daughter, a woman from Brazil named Maria. Despite all these revelations, fans are still rooting for him and Fiona to reconcile in some way.
However, as of right now, it seems like the writers have decided that it’s time for Steve to finally leave the show once and for all. In an interview, Emmy Rossum has stated that Steve’s second departure felt final and seemed to indicate that Fiona realized he wasn’t her ultimate love interest.
While it would be amazing to see Jimmy-Steve make a comeback at some point in the future, it doesn’t seem likely that will be the case. The writer’s decision to let him go was ultimately a good one and it will be interesting to see how the storyline plays out without him in the future.
