Yellowstone fans were left with one of the most heartbreaking tragedies the show has yet to dish out. Season five of the hit western kicked off with a major loss for Monica and Kayce Dutton and their son, Tate. The show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, hasn’t been afraid to dive into fundamental and life-altering heartache for the Dutton family, but this was particularly tough.
The episode, titled “Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow and Fog,” opens with a flashback to the season 4 finale that aired last week. During that episode, Monica, who is in active labor, swerves to avoid hitting a bison and crashes her car into another truck. The unborn baby inside her dies, but Tate survives. The trauma has shaken the boy, who is hysterical when his dad comforts him.
Things take a turn for the worse when Tate is kidnapped by militiamen working for the Beck brothers. They hold him hostage in a desperate attempt to manipulate and threaten the Dutton family, but this doesn’t go as planned. Kayce makes good on his promise to kill the men responsible for Tate’s kidnapping. He even gets a bit savage by offing Teal Beck while he’s on the toilet.
As the season progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the Becks were behind Tate’s kidnapping. Luckily for the Duttons, however, the boy has proven to be a fighter. In a recent interview with TV Insider, actor Brecken Merrill revealed that the series’ writers have crafted a story for the future of Tate that should have all fans cheering.
