Dope Sick Love is a compelling and eye opening HBO documentary film about two drug addicted couples that roam the streets of NYC. It shows how cyclical drug addiction is and that it’s always about the next score. The film also highlights the rough family dynamics that come along with it. Both of the couples had children that they were not able to see for months on end. Hearing the men talk about the sexual acts that they would perform regularly for drugs was a bit shocking but an accurate depiction of the exploitation that many people on the streets are subjected to.
The film was directed by Felice Conte and brothers Craig and Brent Renaud. They are critically acclaimed documentary makers and have won multiple awards for their work. They have done several other films and documentaries including “Off to War: From Rural Arkansas to Iraq” which won the prestigious Emmy Award for Best Limited Series. They also did the 2014 Vice docuseries “Last Chance High” which won a Peabody Award.
The show stars Michael Keaton, Rosario Dawson, Peter Sarsgaard and Kaitlyn Dever. The cast received critical acclaim for their performances. The show was filmed all around Virginia in 2020 and many recognizable locations were used. Some locals got to see the likes of Michael Keaton enjoying waterside views at The Lilly Pad and showing up to grab world-class pizza at 8 1/2.
