What Happened to the Father on the Goldbergs?

March 28, 2024

The Goldbergs isn’t really the same show without Jeff Garlin. Until last season, The Goldbergs was a sweet, understated sitcom about a real-life family, backed by home footage, that celebrated the absurdities of daily life, like Beverly Goldberg farting in public or the older brother being mistaken for a pedophile. Now, it’s a tired family comedy that’s more focused on gross-out humor than heart.

Garlin exited the ABC series last year, and it’s been a mystery what happened to his character Murray Goldberg. This week, the show answered that question in the season 10 premiere.

Rather than just drop his character off the show, The Goldbergs decided to kill him off. The premiere featured a Patton Oswalt-narrated recap of what the Goldbergs were up to in the months between the season nine finale and Wednesday night’s episode, then introduced us to a new patriarch.

The Goldbergs co-showrunner Alex Barnow told EW that this season would pick up “multiple months” after Murray’s death, and the episode delivered. While the exact manner of his demise wasn’t revealed, it was a fitting way to send off a beloved character, one that was modeled on creator and star Adam Goldberg’s own father. Despite being a family patriarch, he didn’t take his role lightly, and his final scene was a moving goodbye. The Goldbergs will return this fall for its 10th season with a full-time cast of Wendi McLendon-Covey, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia and Sean Giambrone.
