A woman was doused with water and swarmed by angry tourists demanding she be jailed after a video showed her climbing up a Mayan pyramid. The video was posted to TikTok and has blown up online with many people accusing her of being disrespectful. The clip shows a female tourist scaling the steps of the pyramid at Mexico’s Chichen Itza archeological site while dancing on them. A security guard then escorts her down as other visitors shout obscenities at her from below.
The towering pyramid known as El Castillo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was built in the 8th and 12th centuries AD to serve as a temple to the feathered serpent god Kukulcan. Climbing the pyramid is against the law as it can cause damage to the structure. The hefty fines for climbing the pyramid were established by Congress to protect it from erosion and vandalism.
Despite the warnings, the woman in the video ignored the rules and began climbing the stairs of the Kukulkan pyramid. She reached the top of the pyramid and was greeted by an enraged crowd who started to boo her and throw water at her. The horde of tourists surrounded her while chanting "carcel" (jail) in Spanish as the security guard escorted her down the steps.
The unidentified woman who climbed the pyramid was taken to a local police station where she was released after paying a fine of 5,000 pesos (about $257), according to the Tinum Municipal Police Department. The police did not say if she would be banned from the area or if she had any prior violations.
