What Is Bondage?

October 22, 2023

Bondage is the condition of being bound or shackled, and is a common form of restraint for those who seek sexual pleasure through physical constraints. Bondage can be a very intense and sensual experience, with the right partner it can create feelings of vulnerability, excitement and sexual pleasure. It is a form of kink that is a major component of BDSM, and has long been the subject of erotic art and literature, from the Marquis de Sade’s Justine to the Fifty Shades phenomenon.

While the term can be used to describe sex in a variety of settings, it is most commonly associated with bondage sex, which involves two people restraining each other for sexual purposes. This may involve the use of ropes, leather accessories and a range of other implements, but the key to bondage sex is good communication and an open dialogue between partners about what will be most exciting and satisfying for both.

Spiritual bondage can take a number of forms, including an unhealthy adherence to a particular religion that may cause believers to ignore the warnings of scripture or become overly obsessed with performing certain rituals. It can also be the result of a particular addiction, such as alcoholism or drug dependency.

The Bible warns against a type of spiritual bondage, which it describes as the servile spirit of fear that characterizes life under law, and is opposed to the filial spirit of confidence that is characteristic of Christian faith (Romans 7). This bondage, which can be inflicted by Jewish legalism or by Gentile devotion to false gods, leads to enslavement by both the physical and the emotional yoke of sin.
