Where To Buy Madeira Wine?

The 900km long Atlantic island of Madeira has produced world famous fortified wines since the 18th century. Its seven microclimates and fertile volcanic soil have provided extremely favorable conditions for viticulture.

Traditionally, Madeira was made from the four principal grape varieties: Sercial, Malmsey, Verdelho and Bual. However, after a devastating phylloxera and powdery mildew epidemic in the 19th century, the majority of the vineyards were uprooted.

Today, six varieties are cultivated on Madeira. The most popular is the Tinta Negra, which is primarily used to make 3 year old fortified wines.

Madeira is a medium-bodied drink that has nutty and earthy flavors with varying levels of sweetness. The heating process during production creates wonderful flavor notes of roasted nuts, caramel and toffee.

One of the oldest companies on the island, Blandy's have a great range of Madeiras to try and a lovely tasting room in central Funchal. You can also order online to collect from the airport, so why not get a couple of bottles to enjoy while you're there?

Another company that has a large selection of aged Madeiras available for tasting is D'Oliveira. Their lodge is a short walk from Barros e Sousa in central Funchal and they offer a complimentary tasting as well.

While it is expensive to make and requires an extended aging process, it is still worth seeking out a vintage Madeira. The Rare Wine Company's Historic Series is a great place to start as it features some of the finest examples of Madeira wine that are currently available.
