Almost every Dr Who fan knows the Doctor’s TARDIS, or Time And Relative Dimensions in Space, is a spaceship that looks a lot like a police box. But what exactly is the deal with that?
It’s actually quite simple: the Doctor’s TARDIS has a chameleon circuit that allows it to change shape and disguise itself to suit its surroundings. However, the first time The Doctor traveled to England in the 1960s, he accidentally let it transform into the shape of a British phone box, and that’s stuck ever since.
A classic phone box in a Northamptonshire village is now back in the shape of a TARDIS to mark Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary. The box took a team of four people 10 days to turn it into the blue Time Lord.
The original series aired in 1963, and there have been a total of 13 different actors who have played The Doctor over the years. Each Doctor has had their own unique character, and each of those different versions of the character has been a big part of what has made Doctor Who so popular.
Whether it’s an abrasive know-it-all or a playful, flirty companion, the 13 actors have all brought their own unique qualities to The Doctor. And it’s all made for a fun, wacky adventure that fans have enjoyed for 57 years!
The newest incarnation of the Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, will start his tenure in November 2022. As a fan of the show, it’s exciting to see what he brings to the table as The Doctor.
